Accelerated Reader Newsletter
September 17, 2008

The PTA is excited to begin our 7th year of providing the Accelerated Reader (AR) program.   AR is a reading program that students may use as an individual challenge or for personal enrichment.  The AR program is completely optional.  With all the upgrades to the school and the new library and computer systems, the AR program is starting a little later than normal.  Thank you for your patience.  AR is expected to start on Tuesday, September 23rd.  The first reporting period for the official monthly award winners will be for the end of October.

Guidelines

Deer Creek Elementary students in grades 1-6 will automatically be enrolled in AR.

Students can pick any book from the school library that has a blue sticker on the spine that indicates it is an AR book.  The book will also have a white label showing the reading level for the book and the number of points it is worth.  For example, a book level of 1.4 indicates it is a 1st grade reading level.  Students can also choose books from the teacher’s classroom or from home as long as the book is on the Deer Creek AR list.  There are over 4000 books currently on the list ranging from reading levels of 0.3 to 11.8 and point levels of 0.5 to 44.  Check out the PTA website (www.deercreekpta.org/AR/ar.htm - the previous page) to see the list of books that have quizzes.

Students may read the books themselves or be read to by an adult such as a teacher or parent.  No movies, videos, Cliff Notes, or abridged versions may be substituted for reading the entire book.  After the book is completely read, the student may take the quiz on a networked computer in a classroom, the library, or the computer lab.  The classroom teachers will make every effort to allot time in the day for the students to take quizzes during the regular school day.  In addition, the students may take quizzes in the computer lab in the morning prior to school.  The current plan is to have an AR volunteer there two times a week to help the younger students.  Quiz taking may be available in the library in a few weeks.

The student will log onto the AR program with their name and password.  Passwords will be the same ones that are used in the computer lab.  Students should never log onto another student’s ID.  In the case of 1st graders, the quiz questions and answers may be read to the student but the answer must be the student’s.  Any student can be given help reading a particular word on the quiz.  If the student does not know the answer they must make their best guess from the four choices provided.  No student shall receive any help from the book, teacher, student or any other source on any quiz answer selection.

A student must “pass” the quiz to receive points for that book.  To pass a 5 or 10 question quiz, a score of 60% is required.  For a 20 question quiz, a score of 65% is required.   Students may not take a quiz more than one time on any book while they attend Deer Creek Elementary.  Extenuating circumstances should be brought to attention of the AR representative (e.g., wrong quiz chosen).  Immediately after completing the quiz, the student will see the percentage they answered correctly and the number of points they earned.  They can also check their cumulative points for the year.
